Hiking in Alaska

Journey off the beaten track as we take you to some of our favorite places.

We also want you to experience the sights and sounds of the wilderness off the boat. On Discovery’s small boat cruises in Alaska we really enjoy leading shore excursions and showing people sights that you won’t see with any of our competitors.

Hike in the Alaskan wilderness!

  • The scenery is amazing.

  • We may encounter a bear.

  • Trails wind through temperate rainforest.

  • And emerge at hidden waterfalls.

  • A short skiff ride home …

  • to a beautiful classic yacht.

From the distance the forest appears to be an impenetrable blanket of dense green. It is in fact a vibrant ecosystem that will surprise and delight the visitor.

  • Scenic anchorages – ‘Discovery’ will anchor most evenings in a beautiful inlet selected for its breathtaking scenery and wildlife viewing potential. There is often time to explore by skiff, beachcomb or go kayaking.
  • The Tongass National Forest – At 17 million acres, stretching the length of Alaska’s Southeastern panhandle and spanning more than 1000 islands, the Tongass is America’s largest National Forest. It is a rare place that contains nearly 30 percent of the world’s remaining old-growth, temperate rainforest.
  • Tall trees, predominantly Sitka Spruce and Western Hemlock, tower over a lush world below where delicate ferns and mosses grow beneath the large spiky leaves of the Devils Club.
  •  Bear trails criss cross the forest and meadows and often lead to clear salmon streams and rushing waterfalls. >> see more Bear Viewing in Alaska on a Discovery Cruise
  • With 2 Boston Whalers and 4 stable kayaks we also have the option to explore from the water.

We love Alaska, it’s beauty, it’s wildlife, it’s raw nature. We have a strict ‘leave no trace’ policy that is a fundamental part of our philosophy.
By immersing our guests in the true Alaskan wilderness we hope to enhance your knowledge and appreciation of this magnificent area.
